Summary
AI-Native Teams integrate human creativity with AI technology to deliver customer and business value. These teams organize around four core capabilities: Product, Builder, Domain Expert, and AI. Each capability plays a specific part in driving outcomes. The Product capability defines the vision and anchors the team in customer needs. The Builder capability utilizes AI to generate outputs and functional systems. The Domain Expert capability brings specialized context to ensure solutions fit the specific organizational needs. AI provides data and automation to support analysis and decision-making.
Operating as an AI-Native Team requires a flow-based approach defined by three primary activities: Align, Sense, and Respond. Alignment activities bring the team together to make key decisions and maintain a shared direction. Sensing activities use data and feedback to monitor products, workflows, and the user environment. Responding activities allow the team to adjust their workflows based on insights. These activities create the necessary flow to maintain high performance.
A human-centric culture remains the foundation of success. Teams prioritize accountability for automated solutions and maintain rigorous quality control over all outputs. By offloading routine tasks to AI, team members focus on high-value problem solving, deep collaboration, and innovation, ensuring that technological adoption amplifies human ingenuity.
What is an AI-Native Team?
AI-Native Teams integrate human creativity with AI. They build customer-centric, AI-empowered products, and continuously improve the workflows that deliver them. Team members maintain control through a human-in-the-loop approach, reviewing AI outputs to ensure quality and eliminate bias. Human effort centers on orchestrating workflows and applying critical thinking, while AI provides data to manage complex organizational patterns.
AI enables teams in large organizations to remove capacity constraints on the amount of work they can produce at any given time. With execution no longer the bottleneck, a team's impact depends on choosing the right work, improving quality, and building tools to accelerate flow.
AI-Native Teams are typically smaller, consisting of three to seven team members, augmented with AI. This approach does not imply a reduction in the workforce, but rather enables the ART and the organization to achieve a broader set of outcomes and execute on strategies that were previously out of reach.
All of this requires a new way of working that balances the autonomy and flow that helps AI-Native Teams thrive alongside the alignment and cadence that ensures the ART is collectively moving towards their outcomes, as shown in Figure 1 below.
This article explains this new way of working, how it differs from previous team methods, and why it is ideally suited to working with AI. Additionally, the article outlines the behaviors that foster a human-centric AI culture. It should also be clear from Figure 1 that this is an outcome-driven approach, which is central to every level of the AI-Native SAFe operating model.
