What is an AI-Native ART?

An AI-Native Agile Release Train (ART) is a team of teams organized around one or more products. As AI creates opportunities for individuals and teams to innovate and produce outputs more quickly than ever before, ARTs play an increasingly important role. Their purpose is to maximize outcomes through alignment, coordination, governance, and improvement activities.

Cross-team collaboration is central to that purpose. This collaboration allows teams to combine learning and solve system-level problems that no team can address alone. The product vision keeps that work directed toward a shared future, while ART outcomes define the results teams are collectively pursuing. 

The ART connects their work, keeping the product coherent and enabling learning to be shared between teams. It also coordinates the technology they share and the AI safeguards that protect customers and the business.

Figure 1 shows the six characteristics that allow an AI-Native ART to fulfill this purpose. They address different parts of the ART's work and reinforce one another, and are described throughout the remainder of this article. Collectively, they illustrate the critical role an ART plays in the age of AI.
